About Me
Barry Ostrager is an attorney who has studied and worked in the metropolitan New York area for nearly four decades. Since 1973, he has practiced litigation, international arbitration and dispute resolution with the firm of Simpson Thacher & Bartlett, LLP. Mr. Ostrager has developed further areas of specialization in securities and insurance/reinsurance cases. A former head of the Simpson Thacher & Bartlett Litigation Department, he currently serves as a Senior Litigation Partner for the firm.
As a trial attorney, Mr. Ostrager has been involved in many prominent securities, anti-trust, and commercial law cases. Many of these cases, such as 2010’s Travelers v. Bailey, ultimately went before the United States Supreme Court, where Barry Ostrager argued successfully for his clients. His most recent appearance in court was a November 2011 jury trial for the industrial manufacturer Ingersoll Rand. This dispute was consensually resolved through less than three weeks of courtroom litigation.
Barry Ostrager earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the City University of New York and his Juris Doctor from the New York University School of Law. Since the mid-2000s, he has consistently ranked among the best trial lawyers in the United States according to a wide range of authorities such as Chambers USA, Chambers Global, and The Legal 500 United States. Over the course of his career, Mr. Ostrager has argued over 50 cases that terminated in successful verdicts, including five in which over a billion dollars was at stake.
When not working, Barry Ostrager is an avid runner who enjoys participating in competitive marathons. He is also a dedicated member of his community, serving on the board of directors for several organizations including Sanctuary for Families and New York’s Temple Emanu-El.
